Adolescent Discovered Dead Following False Accusations of Stealing Cremated Remains
A teenage youth was found dead only a few days after being falsely blamed of taking the ashes of a deceased infant during a break-in, a coroner's inquiry has heard.
Heartbreaking Finding
Kai Lloyd's mother and father discovered his remains in his room at his Connah's Quay home on November 19th, 2021.
Untrue Allegations Start
The investigation heard how his parent received a communication on November 8th, 2021 via social media, from a woman inquiring if her son was her child. The communication added: "Inform him thanks for burgling my apartment."
In a statement read to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the woman had been in the media, claiming her baby's remains had been taken in a break-in - a claim which was untrue.
Police Inquiry
An official inquiry from authorities later concluded the supposed burglary victim had "lied to police" and "it now appears that the property was not stolen in the beginning".
Media reports about the alleged taken ashes generated online comments, and although the teenager was not named in the posts, his mother said individuals "knew it was him".
The "social media content were extremely distressing", she stated.
Mental Wellbeing Effect
She added that her son had been identified with moderate ADHD, and as part of that condition, other peoples' views genuinely mattered to him.
"It would have hurt him deeply," she said, "especially when this was untrue".
Kai was arrested at his residence, but no evidence was discovered. He was transported to a police station and later released under investigation.
Authorities said they would be in contact, the inquest learned, but had failed to contacted the family by the time of his death.
Isolation and Anxiety
His parent said her son "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the police", because his condition meant sometimes "a minute could feel like much longer".
When she spoke to him about the alleged incident, she said her son informed her he had gone into the residence because the woman who resided there had said he could utilize the toilet anytime he wanted, but refuted taking anything.
Digital Harassment
In a joint statement between her and her spouse, Mrs Lloyd said her child was being bullied online after the allegations.
The proceedings learned that a 19-year-old urged Kai to end his life.
She had no worries on the evening before he died, describing how she had listened to him "chuckling and teasing".
She described him as a "compassionate, loving" young man, and said her "relatives is totally devastated".
He had been "clearly concealing his worries", she stated, noting that he could not stand to have anybody "have negative thoughts of him".
School Response
The hearing received testimony from educational staff at the local secondary school.
On November 8th, she "heard some boys talking that the student had been detained and that was the initial I heard".
"He told me... he'd was innocent," she continued.
After the conversation, the educator said she called the family's parents' telephone and left a voicemail saying she had spoken to Kai about the accusations.
The court learned his family said they did not receive that message.
Formal Finding
Senior investigator told the inquest he would await reports regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with suspects with ADHD, before determining whether he should make a prevention of subsequent deaths report.
Delivering a narrative finding, he stated: "Approximately 8 November 2021, unsupported allegations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a young individual.
"Probably untruths were afterwards exaggerated and amplified through the medium of social media.
"On November 11th, he was questioned by the police and after his interview he was freed whilst inquiries proceeded."
The coroner concluded: "There is no proof that the acts or failures of any agency caused or added to his passing and although it was the result of a self-inflicted act it is not possible to discern his intent."
