Alphabet Plans Investment of $15bn to Establish AI Computing Facility in India
Alphabet, Google's holding company Alphabet is set to invest $15 billion to build an artificial intelligence data center in southern India's Andhra Pradesh state.
The infrastructure, which will be set up in the harbor town of the city of Visakhapatnam, will become a component of Google's international system of artificial intelligence hubs located in 12 countries.
"It stands as the greatest AI hub that we are going to be investing in across the globe, apart from the United States," Thomas Kurien said at an event in capital Delhi this Tuesday, mentioning that the funding will be spread over the next five years.
This declaration arrives during a period US President Donald Trump has been urging companies from the United States to prioritise investments within the country.
India's Growing Role in AI Computing
India has emerged as a major hub for artificial intelligence facilities. India's inexpensive data services and quickly expanding online population have made it a center for cloud and AI expansion for technology leaders.
"The infrastructure will introduce our cutting-edge technology to companies and individuals in the country, accelerating AI innovation and stimulating expansion nationwide," commented Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet.
Specifics of the Project
A formal agreement to conclude the venture is scheduled for signing on Tuesday, local government officials said.
"It constitutes a major step forward for the digital progression of our state, progress, and international reputation," stated the minister for technology Nara Lokesh.
This initiative will merge AI and cloud systems with green energy infrastructure and an enhanced optical fiber network.
Andhra Pradesh's Data Center Vision
The venture forms part of the Andhra Pradesh government's blueprint to establish six gigawatts of data center capability by 2029.
Data centres are actual buildings that accommodate the computer and network hardware that organizations use to collect, process, store, and distribute data.
These include servers, data storage systems and connectivity devices like network routers and security firewalls, combined with the necessary power and cooling systems to run them.
Financial Attractions
Across Andhra Pradesh, the local administration has been granting discounted land and electricity to attract worldwide funders.
Market Development
India's data centre industry has grown rapidly in the recent half-decade, crossing the one gigawatt capacity threshold in 2024 and approximately tripling its capability from 2019.
