Caelan Doris Included in Irish Squad While Joe McCarthy Left Out

Ireland rugby squad announcement update

Newly reappointed head coach Andy Farrell has selected skipper Doris in his Irish team for the autumn internationals, however lock McCarthy misses out.

The captain, who has not played since having a shoulder operation in the start of May, recently returned to provincial training, though his fitness is uncertain if he will be fit to face the All Blacks in Chicago on November 1.

Lock McCarthy, however, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot injury he sustained during the opening British and Irish Lions Test against Australia in the summer.

Ulster forward Izuchukwu and Munster winger Nash are not included due to injury, and number 15 Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing a hip operation after the Lions tour.

Leinster forward Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole uncapped member in the 34-player squad, but the Irish Rugby Football Union says new provincial duo Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped western province winger Shayne Bolton will head to the US as "backup".

After facing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a repeat of their 2016 meeting, the team will play the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world title holders the Springboks in Dublin.

"There's an exciting look to the panel and there's an opportunity for the veteran players and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," said the coach, who returns to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to lead the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.

In a mostly experienced squad, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will once again compete for the starting fly-half spot. The number 10 jersey is remains available, with Prendergast and Crowley poised to play against each other for the first occasion in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at Croke Park.

Frawley is the additional fly-half chosen with Farrell opting against selecting Leinster's Harry Byrne.

At number 9, Farrell has picked British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer international victories over the Lelos and the Lobos. There is also a recall for the western province's Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Ben Murphy.

Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey represent an experienced cohort of midfield choices. Jamie Osborne is another option in the centres, but the 23-year-old is also a frontrunner to deputise for the full-back at number 15.

Outside backs Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are named. The winger shone on his first Ireland outings during the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the only new name in the Irish forwards. The front rower has started two of his province's URC United Rugby Championship games so far and played in the second string's loss by the English in the English city previously.

McCarthy was selected in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer selection, but did not earn a cap.

Southern province lock Thomas Ahern, who received his first two caps in those Tests, is kept in the squad, and veteran Northern province second row Henderson is back after sitting out the summer tour.

Jack Conan, who played in each of the Lions Tests over the summer, is poised to deputise for the captain should the skipper does not regain fitness in time to play New Zealand.

The national team will assemble in Dublin on Monday before traveling to the US on the following day.
