Minecraft's Mayhem Mounts Drop Introduces a Stunningly Wild New Spear to the Game

The seasonal game drop for Minecraft has arrived — and it brings with it the first new weapon added to the title since the heavy club made its debut. The spear is finally here and it might just alter your gameplay in Minecraft, especially if you thrive on pandemonium.

A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem

The Mounts of Mayhem drop also introduces several new features and updates related to riding animals in the game. That focus made the spear the natural choice for this update, as the creators had long felt it was time for a new weapon.

"From the outset, we understood that we wanted a fresh armament that would increase combat distance, and we wanted it to be mounted combat," explained a lead developer. "We tried out a few different ideas, but the spear was the one that both played wonderfully when we tested our prototypes and also looked good for the use case."

If you're curious whether mounted combat means you can charge at your companions on steeds, the answer is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an offensive action ideally crafted for it.

"[Jousting on horses is one of the biggest applications for the spear, and it's a blast," the lead says. "The spear has two attacks: You have the jab attack, where you just stab your enemy. But you also have a sprinting strike where you couch your lance and get increased harm [with] the more momentum you have. So [it’s] tailor-made for jousting on horses."

Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration

The wild enjoyment isn't limited to there, though. If you're far enough into the game that you've been to The End, the developers have an truly outlandish idea. "If you are quite advanced, [spears are] ideal for equipping the elytra and flying forth and creating genuine chaos," she hints.

In other words: Aerial lance combat is now a reality, and it should be made an competitive event immediately.

Another key feature in this latest drop is the underwater mount. This aquatic being, which is inspired by the seashells players have gathered for years, can be domesticated and ridden for deep-sea journeys. Not only will it move you through the water faster than swimming, it'll also maintain your breath meter, so there's no need to return to the surface for a breath.

The remaining new features are largely things that want to kill you, as is the nature of Minecraft. As expected, there's also a zombie Nautilus appearing in the water, sometimes with a zombie villager on its back. If you manage to defeat the Drowned, though, you can tame the zombie Nautilus — or the regular one, for that matter — with a blowfish.

"We've long considered this issue for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it appeared to be the right time to also bring in something for aquatic environments," the developer elaborates. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a few different ideas for sea mounts that we wanted to test, but the Nautilus design sketches looked striking, and we have the link to the Nautilus shell that was pre-existing in the game."

She also notes that there are actually two distinct kinds of zombie Nautilus: standard and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] provide diversity to what you encounter underwater."

Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks

Further inclusions include the Parched, biome-specific undead archers that can survive in the sun, which means there's no refuge from them if you find yourself in that biome. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another new mob. Camel husks have an excellent design that sees their bones protruding. The applies equally to zombie horses, who have a similar exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be found at night with a lance-wielding zombie on their back.

The last two things on the drop's list are smaller gameplay updates, including some highly requested tweaks to equestrian travel. Now, you can cross waterways while atop a horse. Furthermore, netherite horse armor is now craftable at the crafting table, so you can provide your steed with the best defense it is worthy of.

A Spicy Send-Off for the Year

In summary, the year-end release of the year is a notable addition. The spear on its own — and the mayhem it enables — would have constituted a major improvement. Add in the Nautilus, and more things seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a touch more chaotic.

The Mayhem Mounts update is available for all major editions of Minecraft.
