James Comey was indicted just days after Trump pressured his top legal official to move forward against him.
Court Developments
During the hearing on mid-week, the defense counsel Patrick Fitzgerald told the court they intended to submit various petitions to dismiss the proceedings before a court case, arguing the legal action was retaliatory and that a US attorney was improperly designated to assume control of the proceedings.
Mr Comey's proceedings was originally overseen by Erik Siebert, who stepped down under influence from the former president after his probe into an additional opponent - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.

James Comey appeared in good spirits as he entered the court on mid-week, chatting with his lawyers and sharing humor. He was supported by his spouse, Mrs Failor and daughter Maureen Comey, a government attorney who the former government dismissed.
After listening to the magistrate state his constitutional guarantees and the pair of allegations against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, Mr Comey was questioned if he comprehended the charges.
"Yes your honour. Appreciate it," he stated to the judge.
Historical Information
The former director was the head of the FBI from 2013-2017 and was terminated about a few months into Trump's first term as commander-in-chief. At the moment, Mr Comey was leading an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between the Russian government and the election effort.
During his tenure, James Comey triggered a counter-response from the Democratic party when he stated just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email system. Legal actions against Hillary Clinton were never brought, resulting in disapproval from conservative politicians as well.
Present Charges
Government attorneys claim Mr Comey lied to Congress during a congressional hearing in 2020 when he was being questioned about both the email probe as well as the election interference investigation. Government lawyers also charge the defendant of "improperly attempting to influence, block and slow" the legislative group by making false statements to it.
Individual Responses
Through a recording James Comey shared to his Instagram after he was indicted, he declared he was wrongly accused and charged Donald Trump of acting like a "dictator".
"My family and I have been aware for considerable time that there are ramifications to challenging Donald Trump," he stated. "We will not live on our knees."
"I have done nothing wrong," he stated further. "Therefore proceed with a trial."
The accusations against James Comey emerged after the former president shared on social media demanding his top legal official, Ms Bondi, prosecute Mr Comey and other people.
