Substantial Online Outage Impacts Many Online Platforms and Apps

A large-scale online disruption has impacted dozens online platforms and mobile apps globally, with users noting troubles getting online after problems at Amazon’s cloud computing system.

The disrupted apps comprise Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, along with a host of Amazon-operated platforms including its primary shopping website and the Ring home security firm.

Across the United Kingdom, the financial institution Lloyds was impacted as well as its subsidiaries the bank Halifax and the Scottish bank, while there were further notifications of problems reaching the HMRC site on Monday morning. Furthermore across the UK, multiple Ring device owners turned to online platforms to report their home gadgets were malfunctioning.

In the UK alone, reports of disruptions on specific applications reached the many thousands for each app.

The company stated that the issue began in the east coast of the United States at Amazon Web Services, a section that offers crucial online framework for numerous firms, who rent out resources on Amazon servers. The cloud platform is the biggest global online services platform.

Just after the start of the day (PDT) in the US (8am BST), the company announced “higher problem frequencies and slowdowns” for AWS services in a zone on the eastern US of the United States. The ripple effect appeared to affect apps worldwide, and the problem monitoring service reporting issues with the identical platforms in different parts of the world.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a platform that monitors online failures, also reported a rise in outages on Monday morning, with many of them situated in the state of Virginia, the site of the eastern US data center where AWS said the issues began.
